Day Four Complete

Sunday 14th Sep
We did it!!!! It was one of the hardest physical challenges of my life, particularly given the weather on the first two days, and I’ll never look at a hill in the same way again.

The sense of achievement is immense. The camaraderie and support from everyone who cycled with us has been absolutely amazing, especially the gang from St Christopher’s Hospice.

Day 2 was just too horrendous not to have its own mention: 88 miles, torrential rain, and 20–30 mph winds smack on the nose for the entire day. It added an untold amount to the effort, both physical and mental.

To my sponsors: you are wonderful and appreciated, thank you so, so much. Finally, and most importantly, I’m pleased to have contributed in a small way. The government provides minimal support, and you really want these guys on your side when you or someone you care about is dying.

My fundraising page remains open until the end of September. I still need your help to hit my target.

Many thanks
Steve

Day One Done - Mega effort from everybody especially given the weather, absolutely soaking.  Bring it on!

Am I ready?

Monday 8th Sep

I think I’m ready but it’s hard to gauge precisely.  A hilly (1km ascent) 40 miler is a hard but not totally knackering ride.  I’m working on the theory that this will translate into milder gradient longer distance days.  I’ve done a couple of back to back ride days and it hasn’t been a problem.  I’m pretty confident except the weather is looking pretty horrible for the first two days, 65kmh gusts that are forecast to be right on the nose to Newhaven and then out of Dieppe on day two. .  Argghhh – it might change.

Food

Monday 8th Sep

A big and interesting aspect that I paid scant regard to was fuelling up.  I did a hilly 40 miler on an empty stomach, an hour and a half in I’m getting light headed and by the time we got back to the Café for our usual finish I was so out of it I couldn’t get my foot out of my cleat and went over onto a guy’s white Ferrari in front of the whole, somewhat bemused, coffee drinkers! So now it’s a decent carby breakfast two hours before setting off, half a flapjack and 500ml of electrolytes every hour.  Bananas are good but not very attractive after being squidged around in my fanny pak!

Two abreast

Monday 8th Sep

I’ve began viewing cyclists on the road differently.  The annoying two abreast going down a lane that infuriates drivers does actually have a purpose;  it stops anyone overtaking until there’s enough space, some will go right past on a bend and if something suddenly appears the other way you’re going to get stuffed into a hedge.

Lycra!

Monday 8th Sep

Bizarrely I’ve started really enjoying it (even the Lycra) and will definitely keep up the weekly rides while the weather allows.  A few of us have got an Isle of Wight trip earmarked, 60 miler and hilly. I want to do something big every year.

Improvements

Monday 8th Sep
I’ve pretty much hit a personal best on every successive training session.  Hills that stressed me big time at the start have become very doable.

Bike Swap!

Monday 8th Sep

Swapped my hybrid for a proper road bike a month ago.  Night and day. Should have done it sooner but the bonus is the early training got me working a lot harder, despite the embarrassment of everyone having to wait for me!
